Setting Travertine Pavers

Here are travertine pavers on a patio with steps.
Travertine Pavers can be sandset or mortared using the thins stones. If you are going to sandset, you are better off if you use larger stones like the stones that come with the french pattern. The larger stones will give you a better bearing when they are sitting in the sand. You can install the travertine pavers over a concrete patio as long as the concrete is in good condition. You can even pour a completely new concrete base that is anywhere from 2 to 4 inches thick. If you are sandsetting, you will want to create a layer of crushed stone and then a layer of sand that is equal to 4 inches thick. You want to make sure that your crushed stones are well-compacted making for a solid gravel base. The patio will make for a very classic looking modern landscape design. Begin with cleaning the concrete slab. The slab does not need to be in perfect condition. But it does need to be solid and sound. Repair any large holes and cracks. After the repairs have cured, you are ready to continue your project. You then need to set your bonding agent. After you lay out the stones on the patio, try to design layout in the way that is most appealing to you. You will want to test your pattern at this point. Most contractors begin in the center and work their way out while evenly distributing the large and small stones. The joints will be barely noticeable leaving enough room for sand to lay in between. Cut your travertine pavers as necessary. Cut your stones so they are even with the edging. Stones can hang out over the edges of the slab by a few inches with no support.
The Pavers Are Flat Making them Perfect for Walking

Travertine pavers are flat.
With Travertine pavers, you get the feeling they were almost invented with patio and pool decks in mind. They are comfortable to walk on so a person can walk across them knowing the surface is flat and not tough on their feet or toes. They are not slippery even when they are wet. The tumbled surface with small holes creates a suction that causes better gripping with your bare feet. The surface also resists algae and mildew buildup that attaches easily to other types of materials. Travertine pavers also endure tough testing to prove they are freeze thaw resistant. The patio decking is an important feature for your backyard. It tends to draw the most attention because it covers the most space outside of maybe your grass. So the appearance of the stone itself does matter.
Sealing Your Travertine Patio Pavers
It is important to seal your travertine pavers in order to avoid problems down the line. A sealer will enhance your natural and will tend to make it brighter in color. The sealer also protects the stone and makes it easier to clean. A sealer can protect against oil, grease, wine or any number of staining material that may be dropped on the stone. The sealers also protect against water or other contaminants that can work on the stone in a subtle way over time. The sealer forms a barrier on the surface of the stone. It can be a gloss finish or a matte finish sealer. The sealer penetrates the travertine pavers and repels the stain. It is not uncommon for a contractor to seal the pavers 2-3 times on the initial installation. Sealer also prevents against the loss of the sand in the joints and will limit weed and grass growth.
